An Intern's Reflection

August 30, 2018

I think if you had asked myself as a first year at my University in the states, whether I would have been in South Africa for a summer, I would have not believed you, I might have even been tempted to say you were somewhat crazy. Yet by God’s grace and incredible plans, I indeed have spent my entire summer (South Africa’s winter) in Cape Town working for an organization that is doing incredibly good in the country.

My experience working at Edufundi has been unforgettable. From being able to witness how a non-profit works and getting the opportunity to go into some of the schools in the townships and engage with learners to spending time at team building, getting to know the rest of the team and exploring the beautiful city of Cape Town, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here in the city and working for Edufundi. There are a number of lessons I have learned since coming, including but not limited to: I know I really want to be a teacher. Roti is one of the best breads invented. And fighting for others and showing love in any way possible should be one of the missions of us all.

In my classes back at my university we spend a lot of time talking about world issues and our personal solutions, but the truth is that there are so many complicated issues around the world. And these issues are not solved as easily as a simple conversation and I’ve seen that even more since being here and seeing all the hard work that goes into making a difference. This experience has given me more ideas and has sparked a fire in me to further my path toward working in education and for social justice. The opportunity to be surrounded by cultures and communities that I am not used to has been great! I am so grateful that I was led to come to Cape town because I have surely loved being in this place.

Let me end by saying thank you to the Madeline K. Albright Institute for Global Affairs for funding my internship and for Taryn, Sarah, Dorinda, Nwabisa, Tia and the rest of the team for welcoming me into the organization and allowing me the opportunity to partake in such amazing work. It has been an incredible and unforgettable learning experience. One that I am sure has had an impact on me personally and professionally and has better prepared me for my future endeavours.
