Miss Vuyiseka Njwaxu has been teaching Grade 3 at Xolani Primary in Gugulethu, Western Cape over two years. She is senior phase trained. As a first year teacher Edupeg has helped her overcome her challenges by providing support in managing her classroom effectively and improving learner discipline. Her Edupeg mentor, Lumka Mvunge, helped her to arrange learners in her classroom by grouping them according to their ability levels. This allowed Miss Njwaxu to cater for all learners with different activities. She also allowed peer support to take place in her class.
The techniques she is implementing on Behaviour and Culture have helped her in many ways; Threshold, by making sure she meets her learners outside before they enter the classroom, greeting them with a smile, thereby setting expectations for the lesson ahead. Do Now, to keep them busy and focused while she prepares to start her lesson and STAR, to get the learners’ attention when she notices that they are being distracted.
“Now that I am supported by Edupeg my classroom is disciplined compared with other classes
who do not have the Edupeg support. The routines are set in my classroom. I do not have to shout at learners in order to get their attention. I also find that when I implement these techniques the lessons run smoothly and everyone, including myself, finds more enjoyment in the lesson. More time is devoted to learning and on tasks and the class is safer for all. Working with Edupeg has developed my confidence and self-esteem when it comes to presenting my lesson to the learners. I am a role model to them and I am an organized person. The performance of the learners has improved in the classroom as well in the assessments.”
Miss Njwaxu believes that education is the key for the development of our society and through teaching continuous learning and sharing of knowledge can take place. She is also passionate about teaching and loves her learners and wants to apply her knowledge “so that one day they can be the future leaders of this country.”
