Let me share with you a short story about Mr Morudu from Lion Park Primary school, Gauteng. I first met him when I started the Edupeg mentoring programme at his school in 2015. At the time Mr Morudu was not a Mathematics teacher but he used to admire my mentoring sessions with another Maths teacher, Mr Mudenda. After every feedback session with Mr Mudenda, Mr Morudu would come for a chat and enquire about the programme.
After noticing his love, zeal and passion for the Edupeg programme I was compelled to share more with him regarding the TLAC techniques and I invited him to apply to the programme if he was interested. He immediately applied and his application was successful. He became a mentee from that very moment. He also told me how he desired to teach in a classroom with order and disciplined learners and that he loved teaching Mathematics. Those words blew my mind and I started planning strategies to assist him to become a Champion Teacher.
I immediately introduced him to the Teach Like a Champion behaviour and culture techniques. The Entry Routine and SLANT techniques opened the door for him to develop into a Champion Teacher. He implemented the techniques and they worked like a charm. Learners began to comply with the techniques, discipline was restored and the level of participation increased significantly.
Mr Morudu and I worked tirelessly together for continuous improvement. If you observe and compare Mr Morudu's lessons now, to what they were, you will surely be amazed by the transformation and enjoy the smooth running of his classroom and his delivery of concepts. He is now one of my best mentees and Maths teachers and a Champion teacher in the making.
