Thanks go out to all our generous backers of the Litha Primary Sustainable Garden campaign as we have some good news to share.
Due to the funds raised by our backers, our partners at Urban Harvest were able to continue with their Edumaintenance support visits to the school, over a three year time frame, which ended in 2016.
This support has been the foundation allowing the school to take complete ownership of the project. There has been a gradual hand-over from day one, but now they are able to confidently call the garden their own due to the skills and knowledge imparted by the Urban Harvest crew. Litha Primary also formed a Garden Committee which has seen the garden grow from strength to strength and is a source of constant pride for the principal, teachers and learners alike.
This has all resulted in the school gaining recognition for their garden through a competition run by the National School Nutrition Programme. Litha came second in the province claiming R15 000 in prize money, “The prize money will be ploughed back into improving the garden.” - Dr du Toit, principal. This is a true reflection of a successful, sustainable partnership between Edupeg, Urban Harvest Edible Gardens and Litha Primary. Congratulations to all on a well-deserved prize! And thanks to you for being there from the beginning and making it all possible.
