The media are full of stories of the failing education system, yet there are many good news stories which are not brought to light in the media, this is one of them.
This is a story of a Grade 4 learner who attends Litha Primary in Gugulethu. The school serves a poor community. It is a no fee school and all the children at the school are part of the Feeding Scheme. Many of the children have uniforms that have been patched up on many occasions but they wear their uniforms with pride.
A few years ago we introduced a system of recognising achievement in subjects, a certificate of merit (70%) and a certificate of excellence (80%). This was done every term. Since then the number and quality of awards increased until it reached a pinnacle with Simnikiwe Buso (Grade 4) achieving in excess of 80% in ALL of her subjects, some of her marks as high as 92%.
We do not see this as an exception but rather as the beginning of a trend. It shows what can be achieved, in spite of social challenges, with dedicated teachers, strong leadership, a caring environment and support from committed partners such as Edupeg.
Well done Simnikiwe, keep up the good work!
